3 Zoology graduates bag awards in the 26th Annual Philippine Biodiversity Symposium

Three BS Biology (Zoology) students who recently graduated in this year’s 47th Commencement Exercises bagged top awards in the 26th Annual Philippine Biodiversity Symposium of the Biodiversity Conservation Society of the Philippines (BCSP) held on July 17-21, 2017 at the Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City.

Jeraldine Mae A. Villaruz, advisee of Prof. Dennis A. Warguez, won first place for Best Undergraduate Poster Presentation. Her paper is entitled “Diversity, Abundance and Occurrence of Canopy Birds in the Unprotected (non-NIPAS) Region of the Mt. Apo Key Biodiversity Areas: A Vital Key for Forest Management.” 

Two advisees of Prof. Warguez and Prof. Demayo also received awards. Al Christian D. Quidet won third place for Best Undergraduate Oral Presentation for his paper entitled “Population Status and Habitat Requirements of the Threatened Visayan Hornbills in Central Panay Mountains, Panay Island”, while Flourence Ray B. Bess won third place for Best Undergraduate Poster Presentation for the paper entitled “Microhabitats of Herpetofauna in the Lowland Forests of Central Panay Mountains, Panay Island.”

Lisa Marie J. Paguntalan and Philip Godfrey C. Jakosalem of Philippine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. served as the external advisers of Quidet and Bess while Jayson I. Ibañez of Philippine Eagle Foundation is the external adviser of Villaruz.

The Philippine Biodiversity Symposium is an annual event and has been the venue for conservationists to discuss matters on biodiversity conservation in the country. This year’s theme is “New and Emerging Trends in Biodiversity Research and Conservation.”
