Institute Council Meeting held online for the first time

WITH VIRTUAL meetings becoming part of the “new normal”, the highest governing body that oversees matters concerning students and which meets only once a semester decided to hold its meeting online for the first time in the Institute’s history.
The Institute Council Meeting was held via Google Meet, a free video-conferencing application that allows for easy group calls or meetings by sharing a link.
The June 2, 2020 virtual council meeting was attended by 339 faculty members with ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor.
However, due to the number of participants, and limitations of the online platform, only the top officials, deans, and assistant deans, and those with matters up for discussion were given the Google Meet link.
The Center for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) and Center for MSU-IIT eLearning (CMeL) worked on technological arrangements which allowed the Google meeting to be streamed live, enabling the other members of the Institute Council to watch the meeting virtually.
The participants watching the live stream interacted in the meeting via another app called Slido, a Q&A and polling platform for meetings and events.
According to Dr. Jocelyn Vilela, Head of the Office of the Institute Registrar (OIR), the Institute Council, which had not met since October last year, was slated to have its next meeting for the Second Semester of AY 2019-2020 on March 19, 2020.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent closing of the campus and early termination of the semester, the OIR, which organizes the council meetings, postponed it.
Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol, who traditionally presides over council meetings, conducted it from his office.
“I am glad that we can overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic,” Chancellor Tanggol said.
The technical assistance for the conduct of the virtual council meeting was provided by the CICT with its director, Assoc. Prof. Dante D. Dinawanao, personally overseeing the activity.
Ms. Nenen Borinaga from the CMeL assisted CICT and helped facilitate the activity.
The meeting that was more than two hours did not dispense with the usual preliminaries that included the invocation, singing of the national anthem and the university hymn.
