To ensure that IIT constituents become aware of the importance and value of statistics to society, the Institute’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics is conducting a series of activities on campus this October that is in line with the nationwide celebration of the 27th National Statistics Month (NSM).

The department kicks off the celebration in the first week of October with a motorcade around the city and opening of a statistics exhibit and holding of an opening program at the lobby of the College of Science and Mathematics.

Several more activities including a forum, workshop, statistics clinic, and several rounds of statistics quizzes and competitions are also scheduled to run all throughout the month.

A statistics olympics for senior high school students is even slated for November at the Institute gymnasium.

The observance of the NSM is enjoined by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Memorandum Circular No. 01-2016 it issued in January.

The PSA is the government agency tasked to develop, disseminate, and enforce all policies and rules and regulations governing the production of official statistics, general-purpose statistics, and civil registration services.

Celebrating the NSM in October of every year is mandated by Presidential Proclamation No. 647 issued by former Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino.

The theme for this year’s NSM is “Sustainable Development: Making Statistics Count”.
