CASS faculty reads papers in two conferences
John Vincent Espenido of the Sociology Department, College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) presented a paper during the 51st Philippine Economic Society Annual Conference held at the Intercontinental Hotel Manila, Makati City, Philippines last November 15, 2013.
With the theme “Markets and Institutions for Sustained Inclusive Growth,” the conference aimed to discuss the outcomes and lessons learned from the past and to revisit the role of efficient markets and a strong institutional framework in realizing the country’s twin goals of inclusiveness and sustainability.
Espenido’s paper focused on Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) of a Mining Company. The conference was in-partnership with the Budget Management of the Philippines, Central Bank of the Philippines, Philippine Center for Economic Development, co-sponsored by distinguished business industries in banking and finance, media organizations, among other corporations.
Espenido also represented MSU-IIT during the 38th Federation of ASEAN Economic Associations, hosted by the Economic Society of Singapore held at Nanyang Technological University on November 27-29, 2013.
The theme of this year’s conference was “The ASEAN Community: Integrating Sustainable Urban and Rural Development”. He read his paper entitled “Corporate Social Responsibility of a Mining Company in Southern Philippines,” under panel session on Environmental Policy and Governance. During his presentation, he recounted that the company’s strategies in creating responsive CSR initiatives would significantly contribute towards lasting sustainability through sustained interaction between company’s operations and the affected mining communities in the region. He was then noted to be the youngest paper presenter among professional research practitioners and university professors in the field of finance and socio-economic development. The conference was co-sponsored by Sustained Earth Peak, Inc., World Economic Growth Center, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, and National University of Singapore.
