49th Charter Day: Institute Celebrates Employees and Partner Institutions

by Rex Godinez Ortega, Office of the Chancellor

MSU-IIT proudly celebrated its long-serving employees and partner institutions from government, business, and industry during its Charter Day celebration on Wednesday (July 12) at the Institute Gymnasium.

The opening program saw the Institute honoring its 136 service awardees, which included those who had been serving IIT for 40 years (Ruby Awardees) and the recent retirees (Pamana Awardees).

The posthumous awards for deceased employees Roseller I. Bonachita, Zenaida B. Polog, and Roberto F. Condrado were received by their families.

Collector of Customs of the Port of Iligan John M. Simon was the guest speaker for the occasion marking the creation of MSU-IIT as an educational institution in Mindanao.

Simon who is this year’s regional winner of the Civil Service commission’s Presidential Lingkod ng Bayan Award spoke on the Research, Innovation, Entrepreneurship theme of the Institute.

Simon delivered a speech entitled, “Working together towards a globally-focused, research-driven, and innovation-centered university.”

Simon challenged MSU-IIT to reflect on why Philippine universities cannot break into the world rankings. He also offered a suggestion for Institute personnel to pour all intellectual resources into finding solutions to the social ills of Iligan.

Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol, who gave the welcome remarks, spoke of the uniqueness of this year’s Charter Day celebration as it was featuring, for the first time, the MSU-IIT Partner Institution Awards.

The Partner Institution Award is given to MSU-IIT’s partner institutions from government, business, and industry who, throughout the years, worked with the Institute or contributed to IIT’s efforts in educating the youth of Mindanao.

Tanggol also touched on a bit of history by talking about how in 1968 the MSU-IIT charter (Republic Act Number 5363) renamed the Northern Mindanao Institute of Technology into Iligan Institute of Technology and integrated it into the MSU system.

He also traced MSU-IIT’s relationship with Iligan’s government, industries, and businesses to the IIT Charter.

RA #5363 mandated the Institute to develop its training programs with an eye to aiding the manpower needs of the surrounding industries and businesses.

“And today, 49 years later, I am happy to report that the state of our union remains strong,” Tanggol told Institute constituents and invited guests from Iligan’s commerce and industry sector, the local government, and representatives from government line agencies.

The Charter day guests included MSU President Habib W. Macaayong and MSU System officials, as well as the entire board of the Iligan Bay Chamber of Industries (IBCI) led by its President John Eric L. Chan and the President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation of Iligan, Inc. (CCIFII) Reggie Punongbayan;

Also in attendance were representatives from the different line agencies of government like the Department of Trade and Industry, Landbank of the Philippines, PAG-IBIG, Philippine Information Agency, Civil Service Commission, Department of Education, and the Bureau of Treasury.

The National Bureau of Investigation was represented by its Iligan office head Atty. Abdul Jamal Dimaporo, while the  Iligan City Police Office was represented by Deputy Police Superintendent Paciano A. Deloso.

The Iligan City government was represented by members of the Sangguniang Panlunsod.

City Councilor Sorilie Bacsarpa, representing Mayor Celso Regencia, delivered the Mayor’s inspirational message. She also accepted the award of appreciation for the City Government on behalf of the Mayor.

Former MSU President and former MSU-IIT Chancellor Dr. Camar A. Umpa also attended the opening program. He was given an award of appreciation for his leadership and contributions to the Institute.
