IPAG Stages Another Showtacular Performance

IPAG Stages Another Showtacular Performance

by Alf Caro Evan Pacana

March 15, 2019- The resident cultural group of MSU-IIT, Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG)  performs another dazzling stage show at the MSU-IIT Gymnasium with audiences from the Iligan Computer Insitute (ICI), Lyceum of Iligan Foundation, and MSU-IIT students and faculty. The show’s piece, Sita: Ramayana Revisited, has been performed many times by the group, but one never gets tired to have a repeat. Ramayana (Sanskrit for Rama’s Journey) is a Hindu epic and one of the largest in the world literature. The IPAG show builds around Sita, the consort of Lord Rama, who was abducted by the demon king Ravana and consequently Rama had  to rescue Sita. In the Hindu epic, Sita epitomizes purity and virtue and when Rama refuses to believe her faithfulness to him and demands proof, she steps into the flame. It follows that Sita wasn’t touched by the fire proving that she did not betray her husband neither in thought or in action. The theatrical depiction of IPAG of Valmiki’s Ramayana brought life to the epic receiving thunderous applause from the audience. The subtle nuances of every movement and facial expressions of the show’s performers speaks volume of the quality of performance of the institute’s resident group.

Honing talents in the theater arts and showcasing it in the world stage, the MSU-IIT resident cultural group is under the creative direction of Dr. Steven Patrick Fernandez. As MSU-IIT pride nothing is more spectacular, but to witness them perform in the MSU-IIT stage. The Sita: Ramayana Revisited of IPAG is no less another remarkable feat to witness.

234th Founding of Bangkok: IPAG represents Philippines in ASEAN Fest in Bangkok

234th Founding of Bangkok: IPAG represents Philippines in ASEAN Fest in Bangkok

CASS Professor and IPAG Artistic Director Dr. Steven P.C. Fernandez met with representatives of the 10 ASEAN countries and India to prepare for the celebration of the 234th Founding of Bangkok, Thailand.

The Preparatory Meeting presided by M.R. Chakrarot Chitrabongs, Former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, set collaborations for the ASEAN Cultural Expo on April 18-25 in Bangkok. Highlight of the Expo will be the Ramayana Festival where each country has been assigned one episode to perform in the full-feature performance of the epic.

The Philippines represented by the IPAG is assigned the final climactic battle and Sita’s fire ordeal.

The Ramayana is the 5th BCE Sanskrit epic by poet Valmiki which narrative has found its way to mainstream and Southeast Asia. Emphasizing the Hindu values of virtue and loyalty, the epic has evolved into versions shared as a common cultural feature among Asians.

Assigned to perform other episodes during the ASEAN Cultural Expo are: Invocation of the God and Mithila Scene (India), The Golden Deer and Abduction of Sita (Myanmar), Satayu’s Intervention and Volunteer of the monkey troops (Indonesia), Pipek in exile (Lao PDR), Hanuman’s encounter with Sita (Singapore), The Burning of Lanka, Hanuman and Suvann Machha (Cambodia), and the Triumphant Return to Ayodhya (host Thailand).

Besides this collaboration, each country will perform selected episodes from their versions of the Ramayana.

IPAG, which premiered a transcreated version of the IPAG to full houses and critical acclaim in December, performs in four occasions at the Sanam Luang Royal Field, ASEAN Cultural Center, and the National Theatre.
