GLOCOL Deputy Director visits IIT for its Bamboo Technology
by Ian S. Embradura, OPI

Dr. Gyo Miyahara, Deputy Director of the Global Collaboration Center (GLOCOL), visited the Institute from August 6 to 9 for a discussion of future collaborations with MSU-IIT’s Bamboo Technology Resource Center.
GLOCOL has this project of building elementary schools in Sambulawan, Leyte using bamboo as the primary material for construction, explains Lilian T. Valencia, coordinator of the Bamboo Technology Resource Center.
The aesthetics of bamboo for a classroom setting is conducive to learning, Miyahara said. Bamboo is also an abundant resource material in the area.
Miyahara says he is interested that MSU-IIT has a resource center that exploits the dynamics of bamboo in which he learned from his last visit in 2014. This is Miyahara’s third time to the Institute.

Making the most of his visit, a Focused Group Discussion was held at the Institute Coffee Lounge with CASS Department Chairpersons and some of the Institute Deans. Miyahara gave an overview of what they do in GLOCOL such as projects in Conflict and post-conflict resolution, human and food security, international and global health, human-environment relationship and sustainability, and migration and multicultural co-existence for plans of future collaborative projects and future visiting professorships.
GLOCOL is an academic institution established at Osaka University that aims on developing human resources with knowledge and skills for transcultural communicability through research, education, and practice.

Since 2013 MSUIIT’s linkage with Osaka University has always been on academic and extension collaborations.
