MSU-IIT students, HEM call for cleaner source of energy
by Datu Esma Mikee P. Maruhom

With the rising calls for environmental preservation and awareness, the citizens of Iligan City has taken up the challenge in raising support against the proposed coal-fired power plant in Kiwalan, Iligan City. For MSU-IIT, a formal meeting has been convened with the KASAMA student government and the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, Dr. David N. Almarez on June 24, 2015 at the Institute Board Room.
The Healthy Environment Movement (HEM), an alliance of concerned individuals and groups, was present in the said meeting. The group, headed by Dr. Melchie Ambalong, has widened the scope of the concern by stating the importance of supporting the calls of nearby Ozamiz City and Kauswagan Municipality to stop the construction of similar power plants.
Coal fired power plants are known to be hazardous to the health of the people living near the plant area. Ash spewed from the plants will also contribute to the pollution, while waters that are emitted from the facility will have negative effects to nearby bodies of water.
HEM and MSU-IIT are working towards the greater participation of the people for the call of a cleaner source of energy, with the Institute representing the academe sector. The meeting has come up with practical solutions and actions for the movement. Vice Chancellor Almarez has committed to convince the sectors of the Institute in supporting the cause, while KASAMA President Jahsaiel Bahan will form their own student group and create various information dissemination campaigns.
