Bana in third place for Professor Mustaffa Young Investigators’ Award

Mr. Elizalde Bana of the College of Nursing and representing the Philippines received the third prize for the Professor Mustaffa Young Investigators’ Award in the recently concluded ‘Diabetes Asia 2015’ Conference (DAC) at Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on August 6-9, 2015 for his study, Seal and Heal Miracle Ointment: Evaluating the Effectiveness of Cryopreserved and Lyophilized Amniotic Membrane to Experimentally Induced Diabetic Wounds.
Organized by the National Diabetes Institute (NADI) of Malaysia, the conference is in its 14th year in the annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Series begun in 2002. The conference is centered on recent developments and practical aspects of diabetes care, to help improve the management of diabetes mellitus, Type 2 in particular, the cases of which are rising in developing countries.
About 42 papers from various health professionals managing diabetes were initially accepted and 36 were included in the free paper presentations. These were presented on the first day of the conference and then considered into three categories for Professor Mustaffa Young Investigators’ Awards for free paper presentations, oral presentation awards, and poster presentation awards for the remaining days. Six of these papers qualified for the Young Investigators’ Awards.
In order to qualify, the participant had to fit into the following criteria: age of 35 years or less at the time of submission, more than 60% contribution for the original research paper presented, must have been a first author and a registered participant, and, the first author must have presented once more his paper at the awarding ceremony.
Ms. Wang Yeli of National University of Singapore placed first in the Young Investigators’ Award for her study Interaction Between Body Mass Index and Atherogenic Dyslipidemia in Association with Risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Meanwhile, Effect of Cosmos Caucasus (Ulam raja) on Glycemic Status in Type 2 Diabetic Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial by Ms. Cheng Shi Hui from University Putra Malaysia placed second. Aside from cash prizes, the top three paper presenters will receive full sponsorships from the pharmaceutical Servier Malaysia Sdn Bhd for DAC 2016.
Emeritus Professor Dato’ Mustafa Embong served as chairman of NADI, a non-profit non -government organization with former Prime Minister YaBhg Tune Dr. Mahathir Mohammad as patron. Apart from the members, its board of trustees included representatives from the Malaysian Diabetic Association, Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society, and the Malaysian Ministry of Health. Likewise, it has an international advisory board of professors from the Philippines, Hong Kong, Germany, the United States of America, Belgium, Egypt, United Kingdom, Thailand, Australia, and China.
