Regents Approve the Appointment of New Deans

THE OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR releases on Thursday (August 1) the Special Order naming the new deans for the various colleges of the Institute whose appointments to a three-year term were approved by the MSU Board of Regents during its 247th meeting held in Manila on July 29.

The new deans, who begin their terms immediately, are all first-time appointees except for the College of Business Administration and Accountancy Dean, Prof. Polaus M. Bari, who, with this appointment, shall be serving a second term.

Named to the role of dean by Special Order No. 01596-IIT, Series of 2019 are the following:

Prof. Rohane M. Derogongan, College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS)

Assoc. Prof. Amelia T. Buan, College of Education (CED)

Asst. Prof. Rabby Q. Lavilles, College of Computer Studies (CCS)

Prof. Polaus M. Bari, College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA)

Prof. Noel R. Estoperez, College of Engineering and Technology (COET)

Prof. Ephrime B. Metillo, College of Science and Mathematics (CSM)

The Institute’s seventh college, the College of Nursing (CON), will continue to have its incumbent Dean, Assoc. Prof. Clowe D. Jondonero, serve on hold-over capacity until the end of the year, says Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol.

“This is upon the request of the whole college,” Tanggol explains. 

“Names for Jondonero’s replacement will be submitted to the MSU Board by September, and CON will have a new Dean by January next year or even earlier,” he adds. 

The new CASS Dean Derogongan is a faculty member of the Department of History who, up until recently, was the chairperson of the said department. She holds a Ph.D. in Philippine Studies from MSU-Marawi and is a former head of the Institute’s Bids and Awards Committee Secretariat.

Second-termer Bari holds a Doctor in Management degree from Liceo de Cagayan University. He is a former head of the Institute’s Physical Plant Division and its Office of Budget Management. Bari is also a former Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance. 

Lavilles hits the ground running with the appointment having recently just returned to the campus after finishing his doctorate degree in information technology from Dela Salle University-Manila.   

Buan is a faculty member of CED’s Department of Science and Mathematics Education. She holds a Ph.D. in  Education, major in research and evaluation from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

Estoperez holds a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Tokyo University. He is MSU-IIT’s Resident Electrical and Safety Engineer and a former president of the Faculty Union.

Metillo is a faculty member of the CSM’s Biological Sciences Department and is the Institute’s official representative to the National Science Advisory Group to the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. He holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from Australia’s University of Tasmania. 

The appointment of Derogongan, Bari, Lavilles, Buan, Estoperez, and Metillo to the deanship at their respective colleges occurs just in time for the opening of the enrollment period.   

They are to serve until June 30, 2022.

Four new deans were elected and proclaimed by the Board of Regents during its meeting on June 29, 2016.

Based on BOR Resolution No. 120, S. 2016, the new deans are: Dr. Polaus M. Bari for the College of Business Administration and Accountancy; Dr. Mark Nolan P. Confesor for the College of Science and Mathematics; Prof. Ernesto E. Empig for the School of Computer Studies; and Prof. Roselyn M. Butalid for the College of Nursing.

Dr. Marie Joy D. Banawa still heads the College of Arts and Social Sciences. Dr. Josefina M. Tabudlong remains the dean of the College of Education, and Dr. Alita T. Roxas for the School of Graduate Studies.

The newly-merged college and school, the College of Engineering and School of Engineering Technology, is headed by Prof. Edgar Alan A. Donasco.

The deans are elected by the Board of Regents for a term of three years from among the members of the faculty of the university on nomination by Chancellor Sukarno D. Tanggol. Nominations are solicited from the faculty members of the different colleges and schools and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Edgar W. Ignacio recommends the nominated aspirants for election.

The elected deans will serve for three years effective July 1, 2016 until June 30, 2019.
