On Going Beyond the Borders with my.eskwela

by Orven E. Llantos

It was way back the 16th of May 2011 when a Special Order (SO) 269 S. 2011 was issued for the commencement of the internally funded research for my.eskwela software. It took 4 years of hard work until finally the first version went public. The software was originally designed to handle college classroom management. It was then introduced to MSU-IIT Community by a series of training-workshops to different colleges and to OVCRE. The training was filled with fruitful insights from the participants to help improve the existing product. Questionnaires were handed out for user acceptability test.

The first research output of my.eskwela was presented in the World Congress of Engineering and Computer Science at University of California, Berkeley, California, USA last October 22-24, 2015. Little did it knew then, that it was just a start of a series of international presentations and publications.

my.eskwela was then tailored to fit the DepEd K-12 curriculum because there is a need for the public schools to automate its process to better serve the public. To know more its needs, an extension project by virtue of SO 996-IIT series of 2015 was forged by MSU-IIT and Tambo Central School (TCS) for the cooperation. Similar to the previous engagements, a series of training-workshops were conducted to grade level advisers for them to be acquainted with the software and to comment for possible improvements.

One year passed and the extension was successfully executed, another research findings were presented and published internationally during the 8th International Conference on Ambient Systems, Networks and Technologies at Madeira, Portugal last May 16-19, 2017. The published paper was indexed by Scopus (Elsevier). During this time, my.eskwela received a research dissemination grant given by DOST-HRDP.

Other topics of my.eskwela like human-computer interaction, educational data mining and the first attempt to affective computing was also presented in ERICAE 2017, an International Conference organized by DOST-ERDT held last October 18-20, 2017 at Cebu City, Philippines.

And recently, another topic of my.eskwela in security was accepted as a poster paper and is consequently published in the recently concluded International Conference of ENTERprise Information Systems 2017 held last November 8-17, 2017 at Barcelona, Spain. The table below sums up the research output:

The lessons learned in doing the my.eskwela research project has helped prepare the students in their research endeavor. In fact, two graduate students presented their research output during the recently concluded Information Systems International Conference held last November 6-8, 2017 at Bali, Indonesia.

But my.eskwela does not end there, it was one of the projects that were chosen to go into a 2.5 months incubation program under the first Mindanao Start-Up Challenge 2016 spearheaded by iDeya also of MSU-IIT. During this time, my.eskwela was protected under a copyright given by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.

my.eskwela has still so much to learn and more research to contribute, but as long as the Institute continues its pursuit for excellence and care for the community, the  members of the IIT community will have more motivations to “go beyond the borders”.

Trivia   proponent

During discussion with the MSU-IIT web developer regarding my.eskwela research project and the attendance module whose development was inspired by Articles 333-338 of MSU Code, it didn’t take too long to implement an attendance module in My.IIT too.
