Dr. Nicole C. Curato, a sociologist and the author of the book “The Duterte Reader” shares an afternoon with MSU-IIT’s OPI. Here, she offhandedly answers the question: What is your impression of MSU-IIT, its students and their role in addressing the social issues in Mindanao today?
Dr. Curato is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Canberra in Australia. She is best known for her work on the popular support underpinning President Rodrigo Duterte’s presidency, as well as her critical ethnography of disaster-affected communities in Tacloban City in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
Outside the academia, she has provided commentary on democratic politics and social issues in outlets including CNN Philippines, Rappler.com, ABS-CBN, GMA News TV, the New York Times and ABC News Australia.
She was awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men (/People) of the Philippines in 2013 for her work on public sociology.
