The MSU-IIT sent the biggest delegation of paper presenters to the 3rd International Conference on Public Organization (ICONPO). The international conference was held last February 21 at the Universitas Ngurah Rai/Bali Beach Hotel in Indonesia.

Institute researchers read 15 of the 64 papers presented. Of these, nine were from the Political Science Department, two each from the Graduate Studies and the Sociology Departments, and one each from the History, Psychology, and Physical Education Departments.

The members of the delegation with their papers included Dr. David N. Almarez, Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development (“Situating Indigenous Conflict Resolution Into Philippine Governance as Means of Resolving Family Feuds Among Muslim Filipinos”), Dr. Marilou F. Siton-Nanaman (“Natural Disasters and Vulnerable Communities in the Philippines: A Case Study on the Implementation of DRRM of 2010 in Iligan City”), Dr. Hilton J. Aguja (“Gender Mainstreaming in Local Governance: Focus on the Cities in Northern Mindanao, 2004-2010), Prof. Elaine M. Baulete (“Greater Program: Its Impact to the Socio-Economic and Environmental Development of Linamon, Lanao del Norte, Philippines” and “Attitude of Household Heads in Barangay Villa Verde, Iligan City Towards the Passing of Philippine Reproductive Health Bill 2011 vis-à-vis the Roman Catholic Church Intervention”), Prof. Darwin Manubag (“Disaster Risk Management in Local Governance: The Case of Iligan City After Typhoon Sendong”), Prof. Eucil Pabatang-Hussien (“Describing the Organizational Culture of Iligan Institute of Technology of the Mindanao State University, Iligan City”), Prof. Hazel D. Jovita (“Organizational Culture And Level Of Job Performance Effectiveness Among The Iligan City Philippine National Police (Pnp) Personnel”) and Prof. Princess Mae S. Chua (“Philippine Electoral Modernization: Pre- And Post- Attitudes Of Registered Voters Of Tibanga And Del Carmen, Iligan City, Northern Mindanao Toward The Automated Election System”).

Other presenters included Dr. Alita Roxas, Dean of the Graduate Studies (“Environmental Governance in Mt. Malindang and Implications on Biodiversity and Human Well-Being”), Dr. Sulpecia L. Ponce of the Sociology Department (“Corruption Practices Among Young Elective Public Officials (Sanggunian Kabataan) In Iligan City, Southern Philippines”), Dr. Cecille Tangian, History Department (“Impacts of Government Strategies on the Environmental Management of Mt. Gabunan Watershed, Northern Mindanao, Philippines”), Dr. Alma Maranda, Psychology Department (Mindanao Child Laborers: A Proposed Intervention Program Design for the Community, GO’s and NGO’s”), and Dr. Ceasar Miguel of the Physical Education Department (Assessing an Institutional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Program: Basis for Piloting in a Typhoon Sendong – Devastated City in Southern Philippines”).

Graduate students who presented their research works were Dr. Maria Pia Sison, Ph. D graduate in Sustainable Development and an advisee of Dr. Roxas, (“Solid Waste Characterization and Correlation Between the Level of Awareness of MSU-IIT Constituents and their Practices in Handling Solid Waste”), Ms. Jan Lianne Ozaraga, AB Political Science graduate and advisee of Dr. Almarez (“Eradicating Child Labor: A Challenge to the Philippine Bureaucracy”), and Amer Husain Laut and H Amer Mariano, AB Sociology graduates and advisees of Dr. Sulpecia Ponce (“Graft and Corruption Practices Among Selected Public Officials in Mindanao, Southern Philippines”).

Conference organizers were the Universitas Ngurah Rai (UNR), Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Korea University (KU), the Iligan Institute of Technology of the Mindanao State University (MSU-IIT), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Thammasat University (TU) and Institut Pemerintahan Dalam Negeri (IPDN). The papers were published as conference proceedings by the International Public Organization Association.

Next year’s ICONPO will be held at Kuala Lumpur; the MSU-IIT will host the conference in 2015.

Besides acknowledging the biggest delegation to the conference, the MSU-IIT is one of the founding universities of the Asia Pacific Society of Public Affairs that organizes the annual ICONPO conference. The collaboration stems from the sisterhood agreement signed in 2010 between the MSU-IIT and Muhamaddiya University Yogyakarta.
