National Scientist and U.P. Professor Emeritus Dr. Lourdes J. Cruz – Guest of Honor and Speaker (see full bio) |
Speaker for this year’s Commencement is National Scientist and U.P. Professor Emeritus Dr. Lourdes J. Cruz. She is known for the discovery and elucidation of the biochemical and molecular nature of toxins from Conus marine snail (see full bio).
In her address, Cruz emphasized the importance of linking science and technology to poor rural communities and indigenous tribes through conservation, reforestation, and bio-resource management.
With Cruz during the graduation ceremonies were Institute Chancellor Dr. Sukarno D. Tanggol, D.P.A. (who introduced Cruz), Dr. Edgar W. Ignacio, Ph.D, and MSU system president Dr. Macapado A. Muslim, Ph.D. (who conferred the degrees on the graduates).

Pre-commencement ceremonies held before the main baccalaureate event recognized the contributions of the graduates of six colleges and three schools. Each pre-graduation program of the colleges featured guest speakers, many of them alumni of the colleges they spoke to.
The MSU-IIT commencement event is unique in some ways. Besides the use of ethnic-inspired music and dance to lead portions of the program by the Institute dance troupe Kalimulan, this year’s graduates sang an original piece entitled “Ready to go Beyond.” The piece was composed by Samuel V. Boncac with lyrics by Boncac and Arnulfo P. Supe. Supe is the former Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Mainstay Octava Choral Society provided the choral numbers.
