New music, exciting choreography, an engrossing story, and connections to history and today’s challenging conditions are some of the qualities that make “Ranaw: Isang Alamat,” the latest multi-media production of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG), an enthralling experience.

A landmark production, “Ranaw” performed to wide audiences as a touring showcase of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in the late 80’s. The CCP after EDSA 1 re-invented its vision to being a more reachable people-oriented center. The IPAG, then a fledgling 10-year old company, was one of several groups tapped to showcase the cultural strengths of the regions.

“Ranaw” with the CCP program performed in over 13 cities in Luzon and in more Visayan and Mindanao venues. The shows drew unanimous acclaim and two decades later, IPAG now commands leadership in the performing arts touring productions nationwide and abroad from its 40-plus full-feature repertoire.

“Ranaw” innovates its recreation updating its first road-touring salvo in 1986 after it won in the 1985 CCP (Bulwagang Gantimpala) Playwriting Contest. The play’s meanings branch to folklore, history, politics, literature, and peace concerns displayed via the magic of the stage.

The play presents our pre-colonial tribes in turmoil in conditions that prophesy our fragmented state today. Dug from the research of the late Dionisio Orellana, Ranaw narrates the journey of Maguindanaon-Maranao-Higaunun-Iliganun epic hero Bato Lakungan. In a significant sense, it mirrors the conditions that beset this region of Mindanao today.

Written and directed by award-winning playwright Steven Patrick C. Fernandez, the musical is choreographed by Melvin Pascubillo and Leilani Fernandez and presents IPAG’s veteran dancers and actors who’ve had long international performance exposures.
