IT CAN be frustrating, especially for researchers, to find needed information online yet get barred from accessing them due to Intellectual Property issues.

However, with last Thursday’s MOA signing with Libtech Source Phils., Inc., MSU-IIT now has access to scientific databases from two of the leading international online journals today.

Institute Librarian Meles Castillano identified the two journals as SpringerLink Online Journal Collection ( and the ACS (American Chemical Society)Publications Online Journal Collection (

With the subscription to Springerlink, users from MSU-IIT can gain access to peer-reviewed journals, book series, e-books, and other materials on subjects in the following categories:

  1. Mathematics
  2. Computer Science
  3. Engineering
  4. Physics and Astronomy
  5. Chemistry and Material Science
  6. Earth and Environmental Sciences
  7. Biomedical and Life Sciences
  8. Medicine
  9. Business and Economics
  10. Humanities, Social Sciences, & Law
  11. Behavioral Sciences

The subscription to ACS Publications entitles users access to the “most-cited” and “most-read” journals in the chemistry and related sciences.

ACS Publications has a reputation for publishing high quality, highly cited researches, Castillano said.

“It is ranked #1 in citations and/or ISI Impact Factor in 15 separate categories including all 7 of the core areas of chemistry,” she added.

The journals provided by ACS can be accessed directly within the campus network by using the url:

Castillano said that access to the two online journals was limited to MSU-IIT only.

MSU-IIT will pay a total of P1.35M in subscription fees for access to the two online journals.

The Springerlink subscription covers 18 months for a total fee of P990,000.

The ACS Publishing subscription covers only a 3-month period that started Feb. 1, 2011. The subscription fee is P145,000.

The MOA signing was done at the Institute boardroom last February 10, 2011.
