THE weekend offers an electrifying development for MSU-IIT, particularly for its high school family – the Integrated Developmental School (IDS), as news of the victory of its representatives to one of the most popular quiz shows in Northern Mindanao reaches home.
Grade 10 pupils Fraunhofer Sherlock J. Sajonia, Abdel-Nasher S. Tanggor, and Princess Hannan I. Tumog, who compose the IDS team sent to Cagayan de Oro on Friday (December 2), edges out 35 other teams from different secondary schools all over Northern Mindanao to win the championship in the STEAG State Power, Inc. (SPI) Energy Quiz.
Friday’s win solidifies IDS’s hold over the long-running energy quiz show that is now on its 12th year.
This is actually the 4th time IDS emerges as champion of the SPI Energy Quiz, previously winning in 2012, 2013, and 2014.
The victory is especially sweet for IDS as it beats Xavier University High School of Cagayan de Oro for the championship, and by just one point.
To recall, IDS’s winning streak in the energy quiz show is broken by Xavier in 2015.
“It means a lot, considering the fact that we could feel that the school [IDS] really wanted to win it that bad,” Sajonia says of the victory.
Sajonia describes the atmosphere at the competition as “super intense,” but explains it off as just “mostly unintentional pressure from everyone involved”.
The IDS team is chaperoned to the Lim Ket Kai Mall where the competition is held by coaches Ivy Claire V. Mordeno and Alma Gloria L. Silva.
“We are very happy because this is a Regional contest, and all our efforts paid off,” Mordeno says.
Sponsoring the quiz bowl is the STEAG SPI, a German-owned coal energy company established in 1995 to build, operate, and maintain Mindanao’s first coal-fired power plant. The company prides itself in being a leader in advanced coal power-generation technology.
The annual SPI Energy Quiz is conducted as the company’s way of promoting energy conservation and the understanding of efficient energy use.
