Dr. Christine F. Godinez-Ortega, the MSU-IIT Acting Director of the Office of Publication and Information (OIC) and a senior faculty of the Department of English, College of Arts & Social Sciences (CASS) received the Education Leadership Award from CMO Asia at the Pan Pacific, Marina Square in Singapore on August 5, 2016.

Ortega, the only winner from Mindanao this year, was awarded for her leadership in literary education, her promotion of the literatures of Mindanao, and for making a difference in the community. The CMO Asia set the criteria for the selection of winners from a list of nominees from all over Asia. A group of jurors also from different parts of Asia including one Filipino made the final selection of winners.

The Editor of the Institute’s official newsletter Gazette and the Institute official journal Mindanao Forum, Ortega also received recognition for her long-time work as Director of the Iligan National Writers Workshop, and as present Head of the National Commission for Culture and Arts-National Literary Arts Committee and Secretary to the NCCA Sub Commission on the Arts.

Earlier in April this year, she received the Gawad Paz Marquez Benitez Award for her lifetime work in literary education from UMPIL Philippines at the Ateneo de Manila University.

The awards ceremony was preceded by panel discussions on “Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)Today: Issues, Challenges and New Paradigms” with Prof. Zakri Abdul Hamid, Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia as moderator, and on “Education for Sustainable Development” moderated by Dr. Lawrence Burke, Director of Education, Beaconhouse School Systems.

CMO Asia gave awards to the best corporate practices, sustainability and social responsibility of various industries and academicians around Asia for Education, IT, Telecom, Outsourcing, Travel and Tourism, Hotel Industry, Real Estate, Healthcare, etc.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is defined, based on a CSR flyer, as “an ethical business approach to meet social, environmental, sustainable and moral responsibilities to ensure that businesses make a positive contribution to society.”

Among the academic excellence awardees this year were from Nanyang Technological University, Stamford University of Bangladesh, UP Baguio, De La Salle University, Benguet State University, Bicol University, Far Eastern University, Trinity University of Asia, The College of Fashion and Design, Asia e University, International Culture University, and University of Hongkong. Among the corporate awardees were Ayala Corporation, Aboitiz, Microsoft, Dubai Duty Free, the country’s Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Thought Collective, Oman LNG Development Foundation, Sustainability & CSR Sealed Air, Singapore Red Cross, Internet Professional Association of Hongkong and ACRES of Singapore.

Keynote speaker of the event was former Senator Heherson T. Alvarez, Presidential Adviser on Global Warming and Climate Change and Founder of the Earth Savers honored as UNESCO artist for peace.
