Using the Project-based Approach, 121 students of the EdSc 122 (Astronomy) class of Mr. Jun Karren V. Caparoso conducted the second “Lectures in Basic Astronomy” last March 12, 2011 at the CED Amphitheater. These students were enrolled in Nat. Sci.1 (Foundation of Physical Sciences) and EdSc 106 (Earth Science) classes of the Department of Science and Mathematics Education (DSME), College of Education.

The BSED General Science Program Adviser and DSME chairperson Prof. Joy R. Magsayo attended the event hosted by Mark Jesson Soposo and Cherry Queen Angcos. Mark I. Ogdol presented the purpose of the activity in his opening remarks. Ten student speakers then presented the lectures, namely: Katrina C. Ramos, Katiryn D. Lagrada, Dunnett C. Cañete, Novelester G. Bastatas, Rizalyn C. Silagan, Jean Cahanza, Bregeen G. Er-er, Emerald L. Ponce, Julie Mae Villamonte and Aileen Rebusto.

The peer teaching activity included the following topics: Brief History of Astronomy, The Night Sky, Telescopes, The Planets, Planetary Debris, Life and Death of Stars, Galaxies, Beginning and End of the Universe, Satellites, and Space Exploration.

An open forum followed the lectures after when the student participants viewed the moon with a telescope from the CED grounds.
