Economics Department

The Department of Economics offers two (2) programs in economics namely: Bachelor of Science in Economics (BS Econ) and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Business Economics (BSBA-BE). 

Courses are handled by highly competent faculty members. There is a good mix of mathematically intensive courses for those who enjoy the challenges of formal economic modeling and, more applied courses that do not require calculus and focus on public policies and business.

Why study economics as an undergraduate course/program?

Day by day, we make vital decisions from among various alternatives. The study of economics provides a deeper understanding of why decisions are made as such and a clear analysis of the occurrence and impact of economic phenomena.

Economics is the study of how individuals, households, societies, businesses, and governments allocate limited resources to satisfy human needs. It covers a wide range of areas such as the economics of money and banking, managerial economics, environmental and resource economics, health economics, urban economics, agricultural economics, labor economics, institutional economics, and international business and trade. The economics discipline is characterized by two vital features. Firstly, it deals with the development and understanding of conceptual models of human behavior to predict responses to changes in policies and market conditions. Secondly, it utilizes mathematical and statistical analysis to investigate economic phenomena.

Students who major in economics graduate with skills that are highly demanded in the global job market.

These include proficiency in mathematical and statistical techniques in analyzing and solving economic problems. Taking economics as a major course is in fact a good preparation for a variety of careers. The economics program prepares students for careers in banking, insurance, service and manufacturing firms, real estate, consulting, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.

Bachelor of Science in Economics
(BS Econ)

The BS Economics is a four-year pure economics degree program. This new program offering is designed to produce graduates with a strong grasp of economic theory and the ability to apply economic principles in the analysis of economic phenomena in various areas of the economic discipline. Most of the courses are intensive in mathematics and statistics which are necessary for economic modeling and forecasting. BS Econ graduates are highly employable in government agencies involved in economic planning and policy-making such as the National Economic Development Authority and the Banko Sentral Ng Pilipinas among others, where they can contribute to the development of many public policies including health care, welfare, and on efforts to reduce inequality, pollution and crime. In addition, they can also work in banks, the academe, or go into independent research and consultancy. The program also provides a good theoretical foundation for BS Economics graduates who have the passion to pursue a Master’s and Ph.D, programs in economics.

Business Administration major in Business Economics

This a newly revised applied economics curriculum which is designed to strengthen student’s understanding and appreciation of economic theories, develop their managerial skills, and enhance their knowledge in the use of mathematical or quantitative tools required in business analysis and decision-making.

The dynamic character of business necessitates the constant and regular updating and enhancing of the Business economics curriculum to keep pace with the demands of the local and international business environment. The BSBA Business Economics is a newly revised applied economics curriculum which is designed to strengthen student’s understanding and appreciation of economic theories, develop their managerial skills, and enhance their knowledge in the use of mathematical or quantitative tools required in business analysis and decision-making.

Graduates of the BSBA-Business Economics program are better prepared for various careers. They may seek employment in several industries and banks or may venture into entrepreneurial undertakings. In addition, the intensive nature of academic preparation inherent in this curriculum will not only equip the students with adequate knowledge to enable them to face the challenges of the modern business professionals, making them globally competitive but will also provide them with the solid foundation required for them to survive the rigors of graduate studies.
