CASS’ Jovita wins Highly Commended Paper in 2020 Annual Literati Awards for Excellence

by Patricia Nicole M. Balgoa*, OVCPD-OME

A paper written by Dr. Hazel Jovita of the Department of Political Science of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, with fellow authors Dyah Mutiarin, Achmad Nurmandi, Mukti Fajar (all from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in Indonesia), and Yao-Nan Lien (Asia University, Taichung, Taiwan), was awarded as one of the Highly Commended Papers in the 2020 Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence.

Published in the 21st volume of the Digital Policy, Regulation and Governance Journal of Emerald Publishing, Dr. Jovita’s co-authored paper was one of the three Highly Commended Papers for 2020 by Emerald Publishing out of several hundred others.

Emerald Publishing Limited is one of the world’s leading digital-first publishers of academic journals and books in the fields of management, business, health care, library studies, and engineering and was founded in the United Kingdom in 1967.

The award, known for being one of the largest independent award schemes led by a publisher, is established to celebrate and recognize the outstanding contributions made by Emerald’s scholarly community and to strengthen the impact of winning researchers by giving them the international salute that they deserve.

Their paper entitled “How do government regulations and policies respond to the growing online-enabled transportation service (OETS) in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Taiwan?” is a result of research collaborations among MSU-IIT, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta of Indonesia, and Asia University in Taiwan.

It aimed to explore the dynamic context of the sharing economy in the transportation sector and looked into the development of government regulations on the growing business of transportation network companies in Indonesia, the Philippines (represented as middle-income countries), and Taiwan (high-income country). It is a comparative study on the regulations and policies imposed by the different governments of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Taiwan as a response to the growing online-enabled transportation service (OETS), with focus on the differing income levels of these three countries.

Using the qualitative-comparative research methodology, the research found that the responses of the governments of Indonesia, Philippines, and Taiwan to the sharing economy sector are incremental and are trial-error based policies.

CASS Student Joins Indonesia’s DREaM-UGM

CASS Student Joins Indonesia’s DREaM-UGM

by Sittie Noffaisah Pasandalan, CASS

Kyla Marie G. Ibarra, a third-year BA Political Science student and the current Mayor of the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology’s (MSU-IIT) Political Science Society, has been accepted to the international students summer program Disaster Research, Community Empowerment, and Microeconomics (DREaM) of the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Ms. Ibarra is the first student from MSU-IIT to have been accepted in the DREaM-UGM.

The said international students summer program has been running since 2009 and has been attended by 465 students from 25 countries all over the world.

This year’s program, the 12th DREaM International Students Virtual Short Program 2020, has the theme “Resilience Amidst Global Pandemic.”

“I believe there is no shortcut to becoming a genuine leader of a community and an effective member of society. We must learn as much as we could and develop our skills and abilities so that we may take part in the global effort to make this world a better place,” says Ms. Ibarra when asked what motivated her to apply as a participant in the DREaM-UGM.

Aspiring to be a future public servant, Ms. Ibarra believes that one should always grab every learning opportunity especially on policy-making and strategic planning in order to be well-equipped in the future.

Like others, Ms. Ibarra’s plans have been halted due to the pandemic and she feels uncertain and anxious. However, she says no crisis will take away her persistent desire to be part of a generation “committed to bringing meaningful change.” She looks forward to learning from international speakers and experts on how to best to address current realities.

Originally designed to have international students stay on UGM’s campus and attend classes, this year’s DREaM will be conducted virtually over the course of four Fridays from November to December.

UGM, a public university, is one of the oldest and largest higher education institutions in Indonesia. It ranked 254 in the 2021 QS World Universities Rankings.

A Woman in Today’s’ Society is a Woman with Power

A Woman in Today’s’ Society is a Woman with Power

by Andrienne A. Espiritu, CED-IDS

In 2019, the Department of English of the College of Arts and Social Sciences conducted the 2nd Women’s Month on-the-spot essay writing contest.

This year’s Women’s Month, the Institute is featuring the winning entries of last year’s essay writing competition.

Below is the 2nd runner up essay entry written by Andrienne A. Espiritu of MSU-IIT Integrated Developmental School.

Woman. Who is she to people? Is she the Mother who lights a house with Grace and sacrifice? Is she the fiery member of the workplace who works day and night with the vision of hum but never the roar. Is she the shadow of a weary man’s success? Woman, always the essential darkness of somebody else’s night.

Throughout history, women have been marginalized and oppressed in this patriarchal society. They are often subjected to lesser roles and menial jobs; or worse, not expected to work at all. Society has always put women as an extension or being next to men. Because of this, they have learned to slowly blend in the background, to work behind the scenes, to stay silent in a world dominated by men. But when a staggering fifty percent of the world’s population is oppressed and forced to stay on the wayside, it does not take long for them to realize their worth, to start seeing a world where they may be significant. The role of women has drastically changed over the course of history, thanks to people who fought for women’s rights. However, we have not completely eradicated the division between men and women. In some parts of the globe, there are still people who stereotype women, immediately assuming they are of lesser roles, classifying them as housewives, or denying them opportunities. There are several cultures that believe a woman exists only so that she can be sold, married, and be of service to men. There are many practices that we are blind too because some of us are privileged enough to live in a society where women are rising to the same roles as men. Ironically, there are still women who have not realized their worth and freedom, women who continue to be oppressed, abused, and treated as objects. And it is up to the empowered women to raise the marginalized women along with them.

We have taught women to build themselves smaller than men. Taught them that if they can offer thunder and the man can only produce a mere clap, then they should stay silent instead. Women have shrunk themselves to a size men can conveniently handle. They try to fit in the small boxes this society has built for them when clearly, they are made for something much bigger. They stay at home brewing ideas with the knowledge that if they come out of the world, it would be a magnificent sight. Despite the struggles that women have been through and continue to go through, nothing stops them from achieving their absolute best. When we look back in history, we can see that many women have excelled in fields traditionally assigned to men or believed only men can achieve.  For example, Ada Lovelace, known to be the first computer program. Who would have thought that a woman could also excel in an area dominated by men? Marie Curie, the first person to win a Nobel prize twice in two different fields of science. She paved the way for many discoveries we now have. There was Frida Kahlo, whose bold paintings opened up conversations on taboo topics about women. These women had the courage to jump through loops, to go through needle-sized holes with the knowledge that the pathway towards success for women is laid out with more swerves and bumps. These women and many other women who fought courageously have shed light on women’s contributions in today’s society.

The women that we see today are empowered women. They continue to contribute to various aspects and excel at what they do. They radiate motivation and exude excellence; they are pioneers of change. They are equipped with the knowledge that they have the ability to change the world. They are no longer afraid to step out into the light. From the many years of living in the shadows, they have come to realize that the light they’ve been taught to stay away from is a brightness they yearn. To bathe in this light is not a fault, to find happiness in recognition is not something to be ashamed of. In this modern world, women are foundations for success. They venture into the world not as inferior beings but as equal partners alongside men. They explore new ideas and touch topics they’ve been afraid to open up before. They inspire other people. Children too looked up to women. The daughters of today’s society are filled with hope knowing that they are able to grow in a healthy world where they are not criticized for being a woman. The women of today are leaders, achievers, innovators; they are power with grace, a strict motivator with an inborn sense of love and compassion.

They say a woman finally becomes herself when she speaks without permission. And every word, every action, every deed that a woman does today without fear of being judged is a justice for all women who have fiercely fought the battle for equality. Woman. Who is she to the people? She is the raging anthem for every hopeful soul and the burning fire that swallows all fear and darkness. She is the figure that does not only stand up for herself but for thousands of other women who stand alongside her. She is no longer confined into darkness; rather, she dances underneath the warm light. She is fearless with her mouth and tongue and the unfailing courage to speak up. She is unbothered by society’s double standards and she will fight for her rights and the rights of other women who do not have voices to speak their truth. She is a woman. Fearless and brave- everything a woman is born to be.

Building up, moving forward: CASS sets 3-year college direction

Building up, moving forward: CASS sets 3-year college direction

by Michelle Jeanne Caracut, OC/OPI

WASTING no time since her appointment, the new dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), Prof. Rohane M. Derogongan, Ph.D., led faculty and staff in planning out the college’s future in a mobilizing and motivating activity held off campus on September 5, 2019.

Derogongan gathered her constituents at the College Direction Setting activity held at the Go Hotels at Robinsons Place in Iligan to identify future directions of the college and to plan actions to ensure the accomplishment of goals.

The activity also served to strengthen the camaraderie among CASS faculty and staff members.

During the direction setting, a brief ceremony was held where Derogongan’s predecessor, Dr. Marie Joy D. Banawa, formally turned over her duties and responsibilities.

In her acceptance speech, Derogongan shared the important values that she felt would help her as dean of CASS. She emphasized the values of time, trust, ties, teamwork, and triumph.

Derogongan also underscored the importance of cooperation among departments, encouraging everyone to do more for CASS and for MSU-IIT.

She presented the college’s current profile and highlighted the need for the college to contribute more to the realization of the Institute’s goal to become a research university.

The new dean enjoined the departments to strengthen their faculty and staff force, undergraduate and graduate programs, linkages, as well as laying down framework and policies of the various centers established which will be supervised and managed by CASS.

The Institute’s Chancellor, Sukarno D. Tanggol, who spoke at the activity, said that he was grateful that CASS was there to represent the social sciences and the humanities in MSU-IIT’s attempt to produce graduates who are holistic individuals and responsible members of society.

“While we are focusing on goals or targets or objectives, there is a higher principle there, and that is to be committed to change — positive change, to continually improve, and that is why we are here as a college. Not only do you want specific targets to be met next year in terms of the number of COEs and CODs and AACCUP Level 4s…but there is that inherent passion in you, the desire in you, to continue on improving individually, as a department,” Tanggol added.

“You will always go back to the general vision of the Institute. Because our attempt to improve our own vision and work towards our own college goals should be contributory to the attainment of our institute goals. I am happy that in the case of decision-making, you really implement fully well the collegiality that is inherent in a university,” the Chancellor said.

During the activity, the faculty and staff members revisited the CASS mission, goals, and vision.

Following the revisit, the various departments of the college presented reports on the different undertakings currently being pursued, as well as re-accreditation plans and future activities in areas of research, extension, faculty development programs, and curricular programs.
