Faculty members and students from the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) went beyond the frontiers of the research arena on November 14 to 15, 2016 as they participated in the 12th International Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences (IC-HUSO) 2016 with its theme Challenge, Equity, and Responsibility, held in the Faculty of Humanities, Khon Kaen University, Thailand.
The annual international conference aims to share works, exchange ideas and form networks in humanities and social sciences among researchers, scholars, lecturers, students and social scientists across the globe. For the 12th IC-HUSO, over 14 countries and a total of 211 papers were submitted. A good number of these papers come from Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, which being a linkage to Khon Kaen University, also jointly organized the event.
Presenters from the Department of English include Lourd Greggory Crisol, with his paper ‘Habak, Lana, Bughat, and other Terms: The Register Used in Tambal Binisaya’, Nelia Balgoa, DHS on ‘Capturing the Ambivalence: The Non Creative Fiction as an Emergent Literary Form in Philippine Migration Literature’, Onnah Pierre Talle on Goodness, Wealth, Marriage, and Revenge: The Values of Women in Agamaniyog Folktales’, Rosemarie Purganan on ‘An Inventory on Language Learning Strategies Used by First year Students from the College of Arts and Social Sciences’, Venus Parmisana on ‘Three Regions, One Indigenous Language, Two Vitality Assessments: The Higaonon In Mindanao’, Loreta Fajardo on ‘The Tarpaulins: From the Perspective of The Young and Educated Meranaw Women’, Ma. Theresa Villabona on ‘Audio-Visual Materials with Intralingual Subtitles: Their Effects on the Vocabulary Acquisition of Selected Grade 5 Students’ and Kimberly Alejandrino on ‘Pagtuki sa Binalaybay: A Stylistic Analysis of Sebuano Figurative Language in Iligan National Writers Workshop‟s Sebuano Poems’.

From the Department of Sociology, Sulpecia Ponce, PhD and Nimfa Bracamonte, PhD on ‘Health and Labor situation of Bajau Mothers and Children in Iligan City, Philippines’, Liwayway Viloria, PhD and her thesis advisees Ariel Abragan, Ramelyn Bracero, Shiela Sinconiegue on ‘Philippine Government Structural Reform from Unitary To Federal: Views from Government and Private Sectors’.
CASS Dean Marie Joy Banawa, PhD of the Department of Filipino and Other Languages and Felicidad Gadiano of the Department of Sociology also presented ‘From the Dumpsite to the Classroom: An Impact Study’, a paper on the college’s Sagip-Aral, Sagip-Buhay extension project.
Other participating academic institutions include National Economics University, Hanoi, Vietnam; Jusuf Kalla School of Government, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Indonesia; Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai Campus, Thailand; Institute of ASEAN Studies, Uttaradit Rajabhat University, Thailand; Center for Research on Plurality in the Mekong Region and Research Group on Wellbeing and Sustainable Development, Khon Kaen University, Thailand; among many others.
With inputs from the aforementioned researchers and from other presenters, Dr. Kulthida Tuamsuk, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science of Khon Kaen University remarked, that IC-HUSO is “the opened stage which scholars can distribute and share their knowledge and enhance cooperative learning in order to develop quality and standard research and theses in these fields.”
IC-HUSO 2016 is only one of the many conferences through which the Institute’s faculty members and students enhance cooperative learning and cultivate knowledge while braving through challenges, in the quest for equity and social responsibility.
