| Dr. Estrella Fagela Alabastro |
Dr. Estrella Fagela Alabastro, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the first woman to head the DOST, graces the 40th Commencement Exercises of the MSU-IIT as Guest Speaker.
Dr. Alabastro was Dean of the College of Home Economics of the University of the Philippines in 1984-1990 before being Executive Director of the Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development. In 1995, she became DOST’s Undersecretary for Research and Development, a post she held for three years.
Nina or Efa, as she is fondly called by friends and colleagues, is a registered Chemical Engineer and Career Executive Service Officer. She earned her degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (cum laude) at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, and subsequently earned her Master’s and Doctor’s degrees at the Rice University in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Alabastro, editor of several food-related publications, has researched extensively publishing numerous research papers and handbooks on food engineering and processing.
Nina is married to Edgardo Garcia Alabastro and they have three children.
