Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC), a nickel processing plant located in Palawan is now offering scholarship grants exclusive to Metallurgical Engineering students in MSU-IIT. The scholarship examination and personal interview was held last September 22, 2008 at Cagayan de Oro City. From the ten applicants, four were chosen as the company’s scholars. They are Virgilio Flores, Jonas Karl Liwanag, Lymon James Marciano and Norgelyne Silos.

The scholars will enjoy free tuition and fees and will receive P7, 000.00 for monthly living allowance. They will also get additional allowances for book, transportation, clothing, and miscellaneous expenses. Scholars will also receive a senior thesis cash allowance worth P15, 000.00 and a graduation incentive worth P15, 000.00. And if they should decide to take the board examination after graduation, additional allowances and assistance will be provided by the CBNC.

In return, the scholars are required by the company to maintain an average grade of 2.5 or better for every semester and for them to render their OJT at CBNC. Upon graduation, they are also expected to serve CBNC as a full time employee for 5 years.

Prof. Maria Teresa Ignacio, adviser of the Metallurgical Engineering program commented that, “the scholarship is really meant to encourage the students to pursue a degree in Metallurgical Engineering due to the acute insufficiency of manpower from the field of metallurgy.” And accordingly, more scholarship grants exclusive for Metallurgical Engineering students are expected to be offered in the future.
